The Logitech Performance VX Resolution is one of the mouse comfortable portable mouse with lots of built-in programmable features via the Logitech SetPoint tool. When I recently broke mine by dropping it, I was fairly desperate to fix it. I Googled around but couldn’t find any instructions on how to actually open the device for repairs so here it is for anyone else also looking.

There are 5 small screws hidden under the mouse’s TEFLON feet. One under each foot located per the below image. Carefully pry up each foot with a small flat screw driver or an Exacto knife. Make sure the get completely under each foot to lift the adhesive and not just the foam, otherwise it won’t stick back on.

After the 5 screws are removed, the top and bottom cover pops off easily for access to components.

How to Reset Keyboard to US English

Occasionally an accidental combination set of key presses turns your US English / Canadian English keyboard into French (Canada) keyboard which effectively renders your keyboard useless.

There’s a quick key combination to change it back. Press the left Ctrl key and the right Shift key on your keyboard to reset the keyboard.

Twitter & Facebook

I was creating a Facebook Fan Page for one of my client and he had wanted a Twitter Feed on a Facebook Fan Page but didn’t want to create a Twitter account or paying for expensive services without seeing if this route would deliver the results he had wanted first.

So to do this, Flux used two very simple, free tools. Here’s how you can do it too to enhance your Facebook Fan Page.

What we will be using:

Static HTML iFrame tabs.
Twitter Search Widget.

Most of you should already be well aware of the two applications. If not, check out their site for more details. Lets get started!

Step 1:

Install Static HTML iFrame tab app to your Facebook Page. There are several to choose from, it doesn’t matter with one you use. Click on the Add to my Page link to install onto the page of your choice.

Step 2:

Create a Twitter Feed Widget by visiting: http://twitter.com/about/resources/widgets/widget_search

Follow the steps to grab the code.

Step 3:

Return to your Facebook page and click on the Static HTML iFrame App you installed in the first step. You should be presented with a box to enter your HTML code. Paste the code you grabbed from the Twitter Widget in step 2.

Step 4:

You’re almost done!

The code you grabbed is intended to go into a stand alone HTML page, so lets make some edits so it shows on Facebook OK.

Before all the codes, enter:

Then, after the first tag like below, enter:

Then, close it all off at the end of the codes with:

So now you should have something that looks like:

Step 5:

Save your tab and view it.

To Flash or not to Flash

When choosing a web designer / design firm there are many questions the client should as themselves. One of the important questions is whether or not to use flash. Flash is a type of animation that’s incorporated into your site to either create introduction graphics, effects or slide shows. The key benefit to flash of course is the increased visual spectacle for your site. If this is what you’re looking for, you should consider a design firm with considerable experience in flash.

Most sites, however, do not require flash. At Flux, we believe that flash is, sometimes just that. Flashy. With a growing number of people accessing websites from their mobile device and smart phones, it is best to choose technology that has wide cross compatibility. Since some mobile browsers do not come embedded with flash, this causes your site to be unviewable.

Specifically, in Windows 7 or other 64 bit operating systems, be aware that flash is not compatible with 64 bit browsers.

Web Real Estate

When you first start out with a web site, this could all be all very daunting. Hosting this, domain that. Just where do you start?

I have used a simple analogy between web and real estate with many of my clients. It really simplifies the technical jargon for most people and extrapolate it to something that most people can understand through their daily lives. I hope you will find this equality useful.

Domain = Home Address
Think of your domain as your home address. This piece of information identifies who you are to everyone else. It’s not duplicated as to not confuse the people who draw the maps. The same way that your home address provides a “name” to call your lot, the domain is the internet’s way of identifying the files your host. i.e. your site.

Hosting = Lot
Think of your hosting as your lot. A lot enables you to start building your home and gives a place for your house to sit on if it’s already built. You can move an existing house on to the lot, or start from scratch. This is true for hosting as well. Hosting is simply storage to store your online files. You can move an existing site to a new host. A good host is also like a good lot in that it will prevent structural problems. An unreliable host can cause the site to go down and become in accessible. Just like a house can sag on an uneven lot.

HTML, PHP, Java… = Materials
All those are simply the different types of languages that can be used to build your web site. Chances are a single website utilizes multiple languages. Just as a house is built with many different materials. They are the fundamentals and bones to your site. The give your site structure. Same way as trusses and beams support your house. So when choosing a designer, make sure they’re proficient in the leading design languages so that your hose will stand up strong.

Web Design = Interior Design/Furnishing
A house is just empty walls without great furnishings to really make it home. The same way that you paint your walls, choose carpet and lamps, good web design brings your space to life. We speak of branding, your web site is a part of your personal brand. Do your research when picking a designer. The best price isn’t always the best work. Speak with the designer and ask to see a portfolio and about their experience. They should have no problem discussing this with you. If at any point you’re concerned, back out before you sink too deep.
